C.O. 5/12 - Nov '68-May '69 An outstanding group of fighters. My predecessor was Herb Ray and my successor was Dan Schilling. The Brigade CG was MGen (then BG) Frederick Davison who was succeeded by MGen (then BG)Warren Bennett. The first six months we were dealing with the "Rocket Belt" W of Cholon and then we moved NE to FB Blackhorse in Long Khanh Province in Jun '69. The Brigade was employed as an "Economy of Force" unit in 3d CTZ; fighting in such diverse places as "The Pineapple Plantation", "The Rung Sat"; and headquartered out of a forward fire base at "The Fishnet Factory". When we moved to Xuan Loc we were first at FB Blackhorse and then moved into the Province Capitol at Xuan Loc in Aug '69, I believe. Throughout the year I was there, the Battalions of the Brigade were deployed in the swamps, rice paddies, and the high jungle of the Delta Region. We operated on foot; airmobile; on various boats; and even on occassion in trucks. Light, Swift, and Accurate truly was descriptive of the Battalions and the Brigade. Albert W. Malone Col. Inf (Ret)

Welcome home guys! I served with Recon 5/12 from about April 1970 to june 1970. My rank was staff sargent and had come from the Red One. In Cambodia I served as the Captain's RTO. My DEROS date was June 28 so my give a ---- meter was on zero. I read RAIDING THE SANCTIONARY and vividly remember Mendenhalls account of going to get those two downed pilots. I was walking drag with a PRC 25 on the way back. A Gook patrol walked right up on us.--- Any of you guys out there?

I am going to post the etched names of our four comrades who gave their all on 2 June 1968, my younger brother visited the Vietnam Memorial this past week and did asked me if he could look any one up for me and I requested that he etch these names if he would. It was an honor to serve with them and the rest of you. Bert
Ready to post to guest book!
I really enjoy this website! I was a boat jockey with the 1099th. Sometime in Febuary, we made a run to just outside of Tay Ninh. Two of us walked into Tay Ninh to report our arrival, and were walking back to our boat, when two Deuce and halfs full of Infantry stopped to pick us up. One guy asked, Where you going?", and I replied "back to our boats." He then asked where we were coming from, and I replied "Tay Ninh." He just said, "you crazy bastards, get in, we'll take you there". That night, these same grunts called in an artillery strike on a NVA company size unit, moving down the opposite bank from us. I just want to thank whoever you guys were. You saved our bacon. Jim
I was in Nam 11/68 to 11/69. I was in A Co. 3rd Battalion 187 Infantry 101st Airborne. I was wounded on Hamburger Hill 5/69. I would like to say welcome back to all of you.
c/5/12 68/69 1st and weapons platoon.
I was the platoon sgt. (E-6) with Platoon No. 1 of Bravo/5th/12th from 9/11/69 to 6/11/70. I got an early out to start law school leaving me with a 9 month tour. I was at the attack on Fire Support Base Brown when it was hit on May 12-13, 1970. I'd love to hear from anyone else in our company or platoon at that time. I'm retiring at the end of this year and may yet write a book on my experience in Nam.
This is 37 years today we got too Nam from Fort Lewis, WA D 5/12 199th. Was in 3rd. plt. Thanks, Bert for the site, and a way too keep in look up the Vietnam Vets. Thanks so much. Earl Bates
Vietnam -- 1966-1967 E. Company, 3/7/199th So far we have found 56 brothers from Echo Company, always looking for more.
Thanks for checking in, I was over to FSB Nancy from Libby once or twice in early '70 Bert
I enjoyed the sight very much. I remember Sgt Lowery. He was our supply rep at FSB Libby and he was simply outstanding at his job. I remember often times getting little extras on his resupply missions, especially when it was a "kick out" rather than a "set down" resupply mission. I always figured he had a "special formula" factored in in for breakage on "kick out" missions. A belated but well deserved thank you for all you did in taking care of us. Malcolm Smith B/5/12 Plt Sgt, 9/69-9/70
If anyone spots spam on this site please notify me so I can get it cleaned up immediately. Thank you, Bert

Hi all ,it is a sad day when friends can no longer talk without all this bullshit.we fought, others died to give these people the right to intrude into our space.I read this page each day hoping to find someone from our past.As much of a blessing as it was to find all of you great people,it is blight to see all of these parisites trying to worm thier way in to our world.I suppose this is just part of what we and others fought and died for.May all of my friends and commrades have very Merry Christmas And a Happy New year! Once again thank you Bert for giveing me this site>You can never know how much this has meant to me. Ray North 3rd sq.3rd. plt.B co. 5/12/199th God Bless And Protect Us All
Hello all. Great site. I was with HHC from Ft. Lewis, to the Nam (4/68-4/69) I worked mostly forward S4 and ammo. Met alot of great guys in all the companies. Like my pals Bill Mahon, Dale Mohr, Joseph Brown, Lt Fritzgerald. so many more. Iam amazed by the number of sites for the 199th. I spent 18 years in the Guard later on, and only met one other person with the unit patch. Lost my close friend Dennis Iniguez on 5 Nov. 68. I actually dropped him off for that eagle flight, and neve saw him again. Boy the shit could happen in the Nam. Glad you all made it back to the world.
Was a squad leader with D 5/12 2nd plt. mar.68 to aug68. Was wounded and sent home. Great site I'll visit often. Looking for old buddys. Found Joe Wood. Looking for Britton,Barta,Russo,Anderson, and (CO) Cpt. Thomas.

Hi, looking for information on Lawrence Butler. Information lists him as B Co, 5/12, KIA 4/4/1969. I am his cousin, I was born after he passed(1969). We are from the same reservation in Wisconsin. Any information would be helpful. I was able to find his MOS, his unit, and where he was killed (Gia Dinh) but nothing more than that. If anybody can send me some recollections or any information, that would be great. I will pass them on to his family. Great site...Jim
