| SP4 Andrews XO Driver C.O. |
| I would like to commend SP4 Lowery for his outstanding actions the day I got shot (May 25th 1970). We were on the C&C and heading back to Song Be in Vietnam from Cambodia. SP4 Lowery wanted the pilot to fly by A Co.'s area so he would know where to re-supply that evening. On our second pass, 1 non-friendly VC opened up with a 30 round burst from his AK47 and hit the Chopper 11 times. the artillery guy to my right got it the same time I did. I was riding the door and took two above my wallet and he took one near the tail bone and on up. Lowery bandaged him up while I monitored the radio. I answered a call using my XO drivers call sign when they asked where did you get hit. I said if you are asking about our location, I don't know, but if you are asking about me, I got hit right above the wallet which I heard some laughter in the background. Lowery bandaged both of us up after we regained power. The pilots did one hell of a job that day . Lowery also took one up through the pant leg close to home. We made it back to Song Be medivac pad and the motor seized up when they dropped the RPMs. Thus ending my third tour. Bert Ovitt |
